Masquerade balls were a feature of the Carnival season in the 15th century and progressed into current times. It became popular throughout Europe and made it eventually into Colonial America. These dances/parties were made into a game where the guests had to guess each other's identities. Therefore, being unidentifiable was crucial and could be quite humorous.
