One last experiment with Affinity Photo. It might be a neat program if it worked consistently and didn't cause me to go blind. Biggest problems had to do with masking. EDIT: I went back and re-tried child clipping masks on the handwriting layer (5). I finally got them to work. It just turns out to be very hard to drop a layer into the correct drop zone. In real life, i would try a few times and if I couldn't get the potential child layer into the right drop zone, decide if I really need the effect I'm going after or decide if a regular mask will be good enough.
