What is your favorite book character?

Hi Everyone! As a librarian I find my duty ;) to ask about your favorite character from a book :) It doesn't have to be a fictional character, if that's not your thing. It can also be a character from a book you have read in your childhood, if it made a lasting impression :) You can also list a few, if deciding on clear #1 is too difficult, :P
For me, I think, the favorite character would be Count of Monte Christo... I read the book when I was in high school, so I don't know if today I would still like him and his story so much, but back then... Such a perfect balance of drama, mystery, and romanticism that really captured my teenaged mind :)

My favorite character is David Champlain for the novel Five Smooth Stones by Ann Fairbairn. I read it for the first time when I was in high school. I have read it in every decade of my life since. I just finished it last month. It had been awhile but it is just as fresh as if it were the first time I met these fine people.

This was my first time listening to the Audiobook and the narration was perfection. If you have never read this book, do yourself a favor. It is amazing.
 
Without a doubt Precious Ramotswe from the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. She is wise, down-to-earth and has a heart as big as the Kalahari she calls home.
 
Ramona Quimby - She was my age, the book Ramona Quimby Age 8 came out the year I was 8 and I loved her spunk and little sister attitude. I related to her so much.

I love Scarlett from Gone with the Wind. Such a good book. The movie leaves so much out and she was just a tough get things done and survive woman.
 
Ramona the Brave! I haven't thought of her in years, but yes, she's a great pick.
I also loved Scarlett's strength and determination, but caveated with her slave ownership.
Katniss rules!
I read Five Smooth Stones on Linda's rec last year and what a multi-faceted character David Champlain was.

Now that I agreed with all of yours, I guess it is my turn to share-- but guess what? I cannot think of one off the top of my head.
I have to give this some thought!

Ha! I have never read the Ladies' Detective Agency nor the Five Smooth Stones. While I can imagine what genre is the first one, I don't know what is the second one. Is it also a detective/crime story?

Linda can give you a better description of Five Smooth Stones, but basically, it is about a Black man growing up in Louisiana (New Orleans area, IIRC) who then becomes deeply involved in the Civil Rights fight of the 1960s. He has experienced numerous changes in his life, including his family, love life, and being one of the only Black students in his college. Heartfelt, terrifying, tragic.

This is one of my favorites, too. In fact, I'm planning on reading it again. This book really had a profound effect on me.

It was a book that I read for the first time in high school. I then shared it with my mom. I think there were several months when the two of us walked around talking about David and Gramps and Sara and the Prof like they were our neighbors. It had a profound effect on me too!

@faerywings did a great job of the description. I would say that it is historical fiction, set in both the South and the North during the time of the Civil Rights movement. The characters are so well developed...it's a long book and by the end, you really feel like you know the characters personally.
 
Ok...I'm a pretty big fan of Penn Cage in the Greg Iles books. I'm listening to Southern Man right now...pretty powerful.

Wow, that sounds like an important book. I would love to read it, but I'm not sure if I am at the right state of mind right now. I feel pretty overwhelmed by everything that is going on, all the injustice and suffering, my friend's struggle, etc., so I need something simpler and with a positive ending. Like detective books where evil-doers are punished at the end ;)
 
I still haven't been able to pin this one down, there are just too many. From my earliest memories, books were my safe haven, my escape. Now I'm of the murder mystery genre. I particularly like John Sandford, a Minnesota author and have read all 30+ books in his Prey series, several take place in my neck of the woods in Minnesota. I just finished the entire Poirot series on Acorn, it's my noise in the background while I scrap. I've never read Christie and I'm hooked on Acorn TV's brit, aussie, new zealand murder mysteries. I'm extremely fussy about audio books because that was my favorite thing to do with the kids, the most spectacular one i ever listened to was the Harry Potter books. Jim Dale got a Guinness record for doing 147 voices for one of the books, I only read 3 of them myself, but listened to all them while quilting and could hardly stop to fix meals or do anything else. Looking at this I realized multiple squirrels and chickens have run through this reply. Some things never change.

Definitely *not* the time to read this. But if things (ever) calm down, read it then!

Oh, I am addicted to Britbox and Acorn TV and all the British/Aussie/New Zealand murder mysteries. I can give you an extensive list of recommendations, LOL. As to Poirot, I assume you watched the series with David Suchet, didn't you? To me, he's THE ONLY REAL Poirot, all others - even excellent actors - are just impostors. Same with Geraldine McEwan as Ms. Marple (you can also watch it on Acorn :) )

But those aren't books so yes, we all chase the rabbit trails. :heartpumppink:

Yep, and I always say, if you didn't read Gone with the Wind, you didn't know Scarlet! She was so much more in the book. So much was left out of the movie (which I loved). I loved her grit and determination and as you said, she didn't give up.

Did I ever tell you al that I had a calico cat named Scarlet? She was very mouthy (sooo vocal!), only accepted attention when she wanted/demanded it, and was more than a little pushy, especially when it came to food.
We rescued her when she was 6 weeks old and I still laugh-- did she grow into her name? Or would she have behaved that way if I had named her Petunia?
We also rescued a feral male grey tabby at the same time. Naturally, his name was Rhett. :p


PS: Books are 99.9999% of the time better than the movies. :nod1:

Just put it on your "to be read" list. I had a hard time with it myself and had to take awhile to get through it. And I knew the ending. But it will be worth the read someday when things are better, I promise. For now, read things that give you hope!

Agreed. It's been a long time since I've read Gone with the Wind...maybe need to pick that up again.

Oh yes, I love them both (although I am still not fully sold on the new detective in Death in Paradise)! My partner and I just rewatched McDonald and Dodd :D It all started with Midsomer Murders (of course), but then grew into SO SO much more :P I adore Father Brown, too

yes, not feeling the newest Detective in Death in Paradise. He's not .......... enduring or lovable. Guess they needed a new style but Im not loving him yet. Did you watch Ludwig? Waiting for season 2.
